What a difference a t makes… Sept or Sep?

Sept or Sep? Which looks better? Which is consistent with the other months? Who decides which is “correct”?

Microsoft has made an update to the way months are displayed. Well, one month actually. But only if you are in certain places in the world, or at least your computer settings are set to that location.

It used to be that when you chose to display months as three letters, like Jan, Feb, Mar, they would all have three letters.

Now, for some reason, Sep isn’t Sep, but Sept. Why one month gets four letters and none of the others do is anyone’s guess. I have searched and can’t find a proper explanation. This is the official standard, (not a light read) but no mention of why Sept gets four letters and every other month gets three!?!

If you really don’t like Sept, you can change your computer locale, but be aware that this may change other things about the way dates are displayed. Be particularly aware that USA dates are usually month first then day, so 4/1 is the first of April, not the 4th of January as it would be read in New Zealand.
